The cyclone Ockhi

Weakening gradually and might not hit Gujarat coast near Surat which has been predicted by the Meteorological Department earlier in Ahmedabad. According to an official statement, the Meteorological Department said that cyclonic storm Ockhi has taken the form of a deep depression and likely to hit south Gujarat as a depression. The location of the deep depression has been detected around 240 km south-southwest of Surat.

During the past six hours, with a speed of 18 kmph, the deep depression was formed over the east-central Arabian Sea moved further north-north-eastwards. According to the forecast, it lay over the east-central Arabian Sea near Latitude 19.4-degree N and longitude 71.5-degree E. According to a news bulletin, it has been predicted that the storm will move north-north-eastwards and cross south Gujarat near Surat.  Due to this change in the environmental conditions, there might be the occurrence of wind shear and colder sea surface temperatures.

According to The Indian Express, an evacuation of 3,200 people from 29 coastal villages situated in Surat was initiated.  This was done merely as a precaution against the cyclone Ockhi. According to Pankaj Kumar, Principal Secretary of Gujarat Revenue Department, said, NDRF teams have been deployed in Surat by the administration and one team has been deployed in areas like Navsari, Bhavnagar, Amreli and Valsad. All the military and paramilitary departments like army, navy, air force, BSF and coast guards have been put on alert. As the forecast says, the rains will continue in different parts of Gujarat like Surat, Valsad, Dang, Tapi, Amreli, Diu, Daman, Dadra Nagar Haveli districts and they will continue to get light to moderate rainfall till 6th December morning. Until Wednesday noon, North Gujarat and Madhya Pradesh will continue to receive similar rainfall patterns.

Similarly, many places in Maharashtra like Thane, Palghar, Great Mumbai, Dhule, Nashik, Jalgaon, Ahmednagar and Pune districts will receive light to moderate rainfall till 6th December morning. The cyclone might not hit the coast and there are chances of the cyclone dissipating over the sea. Since it is the onset of the winter, the system has weakened. Had it been monsoon or pre-monsoon, the story would have been different.

After the cyclone has caused rainfall in Mumbai, it was most likely that the cyclone would bring in a landfall near Surat. The poll-bound state was likely to observe many rallies however, the conditions forced the political leaders to cancel their programs.
