Independent India’s First Voter in India

A person who born on 1st July 1017 in Kalpa Himachal Pradesh and living his life till now very happily become first Independent India’s First Voter. His name is Shyam Saran Negi Ji. He proudly said this that I never miss a chance to cast my vote whenever there are elections of Lok Sabha, Rajya Sabha or Village Punchayat.

Who is 100 years old living a very simple life in Kalpa (HP) in a wooden house. He was a teacher by profession. Although the majority of the election took place in February 1952, residents of Himachal Pradesh were given the chance to vote five months early because of the probability that heavy snowfall would make it impossible for citizens to reach the polling stations. Negi has voted in every general election since 1951, and is believed to be India’s oldest voter as well its first.

In an Exclusive interview Shyam Saran Negi said that in the voting process of 1951 he was not that much aware. He was working as a teacher, so to fulfill that responsibility on time he reached on polling booth by 6.00 A.M. the voting start on polling stations by 6.30A.M. and he cast his vote in the box. He feels so proud when he told this incident to people. He did Guest appearance in Hindi Movie Saman Re.

In 2010Chief Election Commissioner Navin Chawla visited Negi’s village to honour him as part of the Election Commission’s diamond jubilee celebrations. Because he is there from the starting process. During 2014 Lok Sabha Elections, he was featured in Google’s ‘Pledge to Vote’ video that went viral. He is a legend.  

Today (09-11-2017) Himachal cast its votes for CM election. 100 years old Negi was one among them. People of his village feel proud to vote along with Independent India’s first and oldest voter Negi. According to Negi now he always is clear with his opinion about the candidate to which he is going to vote.  “I like Modi. Whoever stands for BJP from here, I will vote for him,” said Shyam Saran Negi.
