Mermaid is an aquatic creature with the head and upper body of a human and the tail of a fish. We often heard stories about mermaids and their wonderful sea life. In our fairy tales mermaid always play a very important role. Now days many cities are presenting water show with artificial mermaids. But may be none from us saw a real mermaid.
A very rare incident in Kolkata, India come into light that a mermaid baby born in a hospital in Kolkata, West Bengal (India). The upper body part of the baby was totally normal meanwhile the lower part look like a fish. In medical terms baby was not fully developed. His legs were fused. Doctors could not identify the sex of the baby due to underdeveloped pelvis and fused legs.
This baby is India’s second ever ‘mermaid baby’ but sadly lost it just four hours later. In medical language the baby suffered from a rare condition known as sirenomelia or ‘mermaid syndrome’. Sirenomelia, alternatively known as Mermaid Syndrome, is a rare condition in which the legs are fused together, giving them the appearance of a mermaid’s tail. This condition is found in approximately one out of every 100,000 live births.
Muskura Bibi who is 23years old gave birth to this mermaid baby on Wednesday (6-12-2017). She gave birth to this baby in morning of Wednesday at the government hospital named Chittaranjan Deva Sadan Hospital in Kolkata, West Bengal. Muskura Bibi is too poor to afford any scan during her pregnancy period. According to Doctor Sudip Saha, the Child Specialistat Chittaranjan Deva Sadan Hospital, “the parents of this mermaid baby are labour and due tom limited income Bibi had not sought proper medication during pregnancy.” May this is the sole reason for their underdeveloped baby. Baby survived only for four hours.
Dr Saha added more that due to improper blood circulation form mother to baby can create such kind of abnormality in baby. Due to imbalanced diet along with very hard work during pregnancy can also create such kind of problem during pregnancy. A similar incident was reported in 2016 also where a woman in Uttar Pradesh (India) gave birth to India’s first mermaid baby. It survived only for 10 minutes.
